Council will have to make a tough pick
There's more than just an interim replacement for Cameron Hanson at stake for the Ashland City Council at Tuesday's meeting.

Commentary

Defining what is `cruel' and `unusual'
In 1996 a California jury found Leandro Andrade guilty of shoplifting. On that charge he was sentenced to life in prison.

Safety issues at Willow Wind
I am writing to alert the community of a safety issue they may not be aware of. Along E. Main St. between Walker and the Forensics Lab (but on the opposite side of the street), is a school. Willow Wind Community Learning Center is located at 1497 E. Main St. (on the property where the big yellow farmhouse is.) Due to the nature of the classes there, children are coming and going all day long - often walking or bicycling. I have noticed quite an increase in bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the WWCLC since spring has arrived.

Published letter: `unconscionable'
It is unconscionable for you to publish a letter (Rob Carter, April 6.) stating that another's opinions "should not go unpunished." Opinions may be answered, rebutted, or refuted but never punished.

In support of ski area expansion
I enthusiastically support the improvements on Mt. Ashland. I have been a recreational skier there since 1965. My children learned to ski there, and eventually enjoyed racing for Ashland High and later University of Oregon. Now I have a granddaughter in Ashland who will be skiing or snowboarding in a few years.

Pointing out a `tonal' problem in ASD story
I am writing to comment on Amber Fossen's feature on the "human side to school district layoffs" (April 3). While I appreciate the intent to cast a personal and human hue to the unfortunate budget situation facing the Ashland School District, I also take issue with the additional, and unnecessary, tone and suggestion of impropriety that permeated the article. To intimate that the district has been secretive, or even devious, in this painful process improperly adds more salt to an already gaping wound facing the community of students, families, teachers and, yes, administrators. Few, if any, rehearse such processes, and there are always those who will be affected more than others.
