At Etna, Calif., the Grizzlies looked mortal for the first time at the Etna Tournament, splitting a doubleheader Friday on Day 1 of the two-day affair.
The Grizzlies (2-1) opened with a 16-5 victory over Yreka - Ashland's second consecutive blowout - then lost a nail-biter 3-2 to the host team.
Ashland garnered 11 hits against Yreka, including an RBI double and a bases-loaded triple by junior outfielder Bryan Clevenger, and committed just one error.
Yreka scored a run in the first inning to go up 1-0, but the lead didn't last long. Ashland countered with four runs in the second, seven in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to win
easily.
Clevenger finished with five RBIs, senior outfielder Charles Dotterrer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and senior infielder Tim Hegdahl added three hits and two RBIs.
Against Etna, the Grizzlies scored a run in each of the first two innings to seize the early lead, only to give up two in the fourth for the tie.
Etna scored the winning run in the sixth on a miscue on a pickoff attempt at third base.
Dotterrer and senior pitcher/outfielder Mike Allen each went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
The Grizzlies play two more at the Etna Tournament today then play Henley on Tuesday at Kiger Field.
