Kids collect cash for shelter
For many, pennies are coins that get lost in couches, shoved in ashtrays, or simply tossed into fountains when making a wish. For three girls attending Lincoln Elementary School, mere pennies really added up.

City will study historic preservation idea
City officials will delve into a proposal to further protect the historic feel of some Ashland neighborhoods.

· Lincoln Elementary Schools' Second Annual Car Contest takes place from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in Ashland. Students have been making cars out of recycled materials for about three weeks during their recess. They can score in several ways - design elements based on physics concepts, craftsmanship, distance, speed and overall score. All students from first through fifth grades can enter. The public is invited to attend.

· NEWCOMERS COFFEE will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at 87 Granite St. for anyone who has recently moved to the Ashland area. The April 17th "Night on the Town" will be discussed as well as the new web site. Coffee and cake will be served. For more information, call 552-9828.

· FLASHLIGHT EASTER EGG HUNT will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at Garfield Park. Kids 8-15 are eligible to participate; cost is $2 per person. Participants must bring their own flashlight and goody bag. For more information, call The Grove at 488-1900.

· CULTURAL DIVERSITY FAIR will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at The Grove. The event will feature Latin dancers, origami lessons and ethnic food; cost is $2.

· SOUTHERN OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY will host a traveling exhibit from March 23 through July 5. The theme is "Let's Play: Pastimes from the Past," and admission is free. It explores topics such as toys, the fitness craze, the role of organized sports, and America on wheels. For more information, call 773-6536.
