Call me small-town at heart, but Ashland's Festival of Lights 2001 was exactly what it was last year - a delightful reminder of a more simple world.
From its adorable makeshift floats and out-of-tune high school band to the colorful parade performers and the thousands that line Main Street, the Festival of Lights celebration is one great Christmas kick-off.
Americans everywhere should take note of how this Southern Oregon town - already known for its quaintness and yearly Shakespeare Festival - continues to instill a unique Norman Rockwell-like presence.
Suggestions for next year? Have emcees interview parade participants longer, mic those singing carols, return to brass bands playing Christmas songs after the parade and, most of all, more of the same.
As a visiting Californian, I congratulate my daughter April for having the wisdom to stay in Ashland after college.
And to the people of this magical town, you have much reason to be proud and grateful this holiday season.
